Powering Your Journey, On Land and Sea—With Confidence and Safety

Battery Systems

The battery system in your vehicle or boat is one of its most critical components. It powers your engines and generators, and supplies energy to every electrical system, from lighting to navigation and communications. Ensuring you have the correct marine battery or automotive battery type and size, along with a proper battery charging system and maintenance routine, is essential for consistent and reliable performance.

At Southern Auto & Marine, we assess your unique power needs and install a custom-tailored battery solution to ensure reliable performance for your vehicle or vessel. Whether it's a marine battery or automotive battery, our expert team implements the right battery management and charging systems to keep you powered up when it matters most.

Battery Options

Today’s market offers a wide range of battery options, including lead-acid batteries (flooded, AGM, gel, and lead crystal) and cutting-edge lithium-ion batteries. Advanced battery chargers and battery management systems have also evolved, featuring complex algorithms designed to optimise charging efficiency and longevity for specific battery types.

Lithium Battery Considerations

The term “lithium” or “lithium-ion” often refers broadly to any lithium battery, but the variety of lithium battery technologies available today requires careful selection. Choosing the right lithium marine battery or automotive lithium battery is not only important for meeting your energy demands but also for ensuring safety, especially in sensitive environments like boats and vehicles.

Preventing fires in vessels or cars is paramount, and selecting the safest lithium battery type is critical. Of the six common types of lithium batteries, only one—Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP or LiFePO4)—meets the stringent safety and performance standards required for vehicles and watercraft.

We Recommend

At Southern Auto & Marine, we use only LiFePO4 batteries due to their excellent safety record. Their unique chemical composition prevents self-ignition or combustion, eliminating the need for specialised fire suppression systems. Additionally, LFP batteries do not require venting, allowing installation in enclosed spaces without the risk of releasing hazardous gases. These batteries are also highly durable, with an IP66 rating for resistance to water and dust, making them ideal for both marine and automotive applications.
